Buena Amistad Group's story

Juana, age 39, emphasizes that persevering work is the basis for getting ahead. She is married and has five children, from 6 to 18 years of age. Three are in primary school, in third and fifth grade. The two older ones finished sixth grade. Juana only completed second grade; for economic reasons, she didn't continue.

Eight years ago, together with her husband, a mechanic with his own workshop, they began a business from their house, selling spare parts for vehicles. Two of their children who are no longer in school now help in the workshop, strengthening the family work.

To stock their business and meet the needs of their clientele, she is applying for her third Kiva loan to buy spare parts, especially fast-moving pieces such as seals, brake fluid, oils, alternators, and rear-view mirrors. Their goal is to continue growing and strengthen their business.

In the "Buena Amistad" Friendship Bridge communal bank there are seven Maya K'iche women who live in the department/state of Totonicapán. They have joined together to participate in the "Microcrédito Plus" program, which offers loans, education, and basic health services. The majority of these women raise domestic animals, make traditional clothing, and sell spare parts for vehicles. Every month, they make payments and receive training in self esteem, good investing, and savings. Every two months, they have access to basic health services.

The beneficiaries are grateful to the Kiva lenders.
