Faridah's story

Faridah is 40 years old and lives in the town of Kiyinda in the Kiyinda region of Uganda. She is married and has 2 children who are both currently in school. For the past 2 years, Faridah has been working hard to manage her retail shop, which sells sugar, soap, salt, detergent and other items. To help expand her business, Faridah has requested a loan of 1,800,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to restock the shop with more items, and will help Faridah to generate greater profits. Profits from the business will be used to improve the standard of living of her family members. Faridah hopes that in the future she will be able to build her own house. She is a member of BRAC's microfinance program, which primarily serves small-group members like her who do not have collateral for commercial loans but have businesses that have grown and qualify for microloans.
