Book Jom Ndiankha Group's story

Marie, holding the sheep's rope, is the leader of the 'Book Jam' group, whose name is a Wolof term meaning 'Union with Courage'. Maris is a 54-year-old teacher. She is standing up and raising her right hand in the photo, and is married to an agricultural farmer. She is a mother of four children aged 5-11 years, three of whom attend school.

Marie is a creditworthy client for VisionFund Senegal. She has been running her business for eight years. With this loan, she is planning to buy animals (sheep and goats) so as to improve her business and increase her income. She visits the local weekly markets to buy her stock and eventually sells the animals on in and around her local area. She uses her profits to take care of her family's needs around health, food, education and hygiene.

Amongst the challenges she faces are strong competition, loss and illness amongst her herd and the increased cost of transport.

Marie wishes to have a large herd and develop her business at a national scale.
