The Communal Bank “Rumichaka” is starting its ninth cycle with 16 members. They engage in agriculture, planting vegetables, and other activites. However, they were affected by the constant rains that occurred throughout the area during the months of January and February of this year.

Nelly is serving as President for this current loan cycle. She is 24 years old, in a common-law marriage, and has three children (ages 9, 5, and 3). Nelly grows vegetables and plants. The loan she is requesting will be invested in the purchase of vegetable seeds.

Nelly grows vegetables in the community of Rumichaka, which is 25 minutes away from the city of Huamanga. During the harvest season, she brings her produce to the Nery García Zarate Market to sell in bulk. She joined FINCA Peru after being invited by the other members and is now participating in her second loan cycle. She enjoys the convenience of the loans and the great joy that comes when finishing a loan cycle. Nelly already has a little bit of money saved. Her dream is to recover from the rains that impacted her farmland so that her business can continue to prosper.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
