Fanice is married with three children between the ages of two months and eight years. She is a farmer in Kitale town of Western Kenya and has been in farming for the last six years. She produces and sells milk, maize, and beans at the local market.
Fanice is requesting a loan of 80,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to help her construct both a poultry unit for 30,000 KES and a dairy unit for 20,000 KES. She will use the rest of her funds to purchase poultry. Fanice is optimistic and focuses on having at least 1,000 birds on her farm. She says the high cost of artificial insemination is the main undoing of dairy farming. Fanice knows her loan will enable her to improve her family’s living standards.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
