Flor De La Maya Group's story
Growing cardamon in Guatemala is an economic pillar as the country is the world's main producer, benefitting hundreds of thousands families.
19-year-old Keyla and her husband have worked in agriculture growing cardamon for three years. The couple obtain two harvests per year and employ ten people to work the land and bring in the harvest.
Keyla sells the product in the community. She is seeking her first Kiva loan to buy organic fertilizer. As a future goal she wishes to expand the farm, generate income, and provide her two children (ages 10 months and 3 years) with a better standard of living.
In the Friendship Bridge community bank Flor de la Maya there are nine women of Maya Q’eqchi ancestry who live the mountainous areas of the department and state of Quiché. All the women grow cardamon. Every month they learn about four themes: business, family, women, and health as part of the Microcrédito Plus program. The facilitator uses pictures, games, and drama to help the women learn about good business skills such as making business plans, savings, and investment.
They receive bi-monthly basic medical visits from a nurse who does examinations, evaluations, and consultations as part of the Salud para toda la vida program.
Thank you, Kiva lenders around the world, for supporting the growth and success of these women!
