Mujeres Con Vision Group's story
It is quite common in Guatemala to see a sign in front of a small store saying, “Hoy se abre paca,” referring to the opening of a bale of second-hand clothing, probably from the United States. These businesses are quite popular, especially in rural areas of Guatemala. Gloria, a 24-year-old single woman who lives with her parents and a brother, sells used clothing from her home and also advertises on social media. She has one employee who helps her deliver the clothing. She requests her fourth Kiva loan to buy more clothing.
Gloria is an ambitious young woman who graduated from high school with her diploma in business administration. She works as a bank teller on weekdays and also is studying cosmetology (hair-cutting, styling, and eyelashes) on weekends. Gloria was elected Treasurer of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres con Vision,” or "Women with Vision,” by six Spanish-speaking women.
These ladies rent plastic tables and chairs, sell Mexican products, tortillas, regional appetizers, and chicken by the pound. They participate in the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, monthly educational training, and bi-monthly healthcare services. Recent topics for the training have been about the risks of loaning one’s name to another person’s business, empowerment, business administration, and women’s health. Every two months, a traveling nurse offers exams, consults, and family planning.
