Sector 2 Group's story

24-year-old Berta farms cardamom, corn, and beans, raises chickens and turkeys, and has a convenience store! She is single and lives with her parents in a rural area in the department/state of Alta Verapaz. She is also the President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Sector 2."  She attended school for six years and could not continue, as her parents lacked financial resources. Berta opened her store three years ago and now needs to restock the shelves. She is requesting her second Kiva loan to buy everyday products. Her goals are to expand all the businesses.

As President of the “Sector 2” Trust Bank, Berta calls monthly meetings to order and the six Maya Q’eqchi ladies in the group make loan payments. They all have the same businesses as Berta. They benefit greatly from monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program. Since they have a limited amount of education, a Facilitator uses pictures, diagrams, role-playing and games to share information about health, hygiene, nutrition, family matters, business issues, and more. The women are delighted to empower themselves with new information and often share it with family members and friends.

Kiva lenders, partnering with Friendship Bridge, are greatly appreciated by Berta and the ladies in the Trust Bank. They are striving to build better lives, bolster their businesses, and be successful. Thank you, Kiva lenders, for the vital role you play in their lives!
