Amistad De Los Riscos 3 Group's story
Fifty-year-old Migdalia, a mother of three grown children who range in age from twenty-one to twenty-six, has only three years of formal education. She shares that she had ten siblings and that there simply were not enough funds for her to continue. She is married to a drinking-water well driller.
For twenty years, Migdalia has sewn by hand traditional “huipiles” (blouses) that she sells by custom order. She delivers three each month with the help of two employees. She buys and sells eggs and raises domestic livestock. She also arranges thread for weaving designs into traditional textiles.
Migdalia's goals are to save income, buy farmland, and grow fruit. She requests her second Kiva loan to buy fabric, thread, eggs, and feed for her livestock.
Migdalia joined five Maya K’iche women and formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Amistad de los Riscos 3” in the department/state of Totonicapan. These ladies weave traditional textiles, manage convenience stores, raise livestock, or sell eggs. They meet monthly, make loan payments, and participate in educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education, and healthcare.
