Mujeres De Tintonel Group

Mujeres De Tintonel Group's story

Fifty-year-old Micaelina shares that she only attended school for three years because her father died when she was only a year old. Her mother left her with her grandmother and then started a new life with another man. When she wasn’t in school, Micaelina looked after her grandmother’s flock of sheep. When she was sixteen, she worked as a domestic. She married at eighteen, got pregnant, and had a daughter. But her husband abused her, she left him and was alone for eight years. After eight years she married her second husband, who is a day laborer, and had four more daughters. Her children range from twelve to thirty years of age. Her oldest daughter is a single mother with kidney issues, so she lives with Micaelina, who cares for her. Micaelina has three businesses, including animal husbandry (chickens, pigs), a convenience store, and sales of regional snack foods. She requests her second Kiva loan to restock the shelves of her store, buy another pig, and chicken/pig feed. Her goal is to build a home.

Micaelina was elected President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres de Tintonel” in the department/state of Huehuetenango. There are eight women in the group, of them speak Maya Mam, and only Macaelina speaks Maya K’iche. They mostly work at their convenience stores, animal husbandry, and sales of regional snack foods and clothing. They participate in the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education, and healthcare.
