Flor Del Campo Chuacorral Group's story

Sulma, 25, married a weaver of traditional skirts/”cortes” when she was 19, and they have 2 children, ages 15 months and 4 years. She has a ninth-grade education but could not continue because her mother lacked financial resources. She joined her husband in his weaving business 5 years ago. The couple has 4 employees and can finish 8 “cortes”/traditional skirts each week. She delivers them to sellers in the department/state of Totonicapan. She added another business, decorating traditional colorful aprons/”delantales” with decor 2 years ago and can deliver 8 each month.

Sulma has requested her third Kiva loan to buy fabric, thread, and accessories. She states, “I want to grow more than I am now. I want to hire more employees.”

Sulma was elected Secretary of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Flor del Campo Chuacorral” by six Maya K’iche women who also live in a rural area in Totonicapan. They all have traditional textile businesses like Zulma. The “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education, and healthcare is vital for their success since they have little or no education, and healthcare services can be challenging to access. Each month, a Facilitator shares useful information with them drawn from four areas: business, health, family matters, and women’s issues. Every other month, a nurse visits their community and offers exams, consults, and family planning.

Thank you, kind Kiva lenders, for your generosity! Happy Holidays!
