San Jose Group's story
Forty-nine-year-old Rosa is married to a farmer, and they have eleven children and seventeen grandchildren. Rosa married when she was seventeen. She has no formal education because her parents lacked financial resources. Ten years ago, she opened her business raising chickens, turkeys, and pigs. Ten years ago, she seeded a plot of land and planted corn and vegetables that she sells in the local market. Her children help her with the business. Rosa wants to expand the businesses and meet increased demand. She requests her first Kiva loan to buy chickens, organic fertilizer, and seeds.
Rosa was elected President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “San Jose” by six women who speak Maya Poqomchi and Q’eqchi, in the department (state) of Quiché. These ladies raise animals, as well as farm corn and cardamom. Many are like Rosa and did not attend school. They benefit greatly from monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education, and healthcare services. A recent topic for the training was about the prevention of women’s diseases. Other topics are drawn from four areas: health, family, women, and business. Every other month, they have access to basic healthcare services, including exams, consults, and family planning.
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for your kindness and your generosity! Much appreciated by Rosa and her friends!
