Mujeres Unidas Chuscaj Group's story
Thirty-year-old Elida works with her husband, whom she married when she was 26. The couple opened their business one year ago, selling chickens that they butchered. They make deliveries in their own car on weekdays. The couple has a three-year-old son. Elida started her main business four years ago, selling regional appetizers late afternoons and evenings in a community in the department/state of Huehuetenango. Elida decided that it would be productive to start another business selling fruit and fireworks. She requests her second Kiva loan to buy fruit, fireworks, kites, as well as more chickens. Her goals are to expand the businesses and add an employee to help with orders.
Elida was elected Treasurer of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres Unidas Chuscaj” by six ladies. Many of them have the same businesses as Elida, while others work at their convenience stores. Their monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program, is quite useful for them. A recent topic was about the risks of over-indebtedness. Other topics are very relevant in their lives, so the ladies learn about effective business management practices, health, hygiene, nutrition, and self-esteem. Often, they share what they learn with family members and friends.
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for lending a helping hand!
