The communal bank “Amancay” (Lily) will start its first cycle in Pro Mujer (Pro Woman) as a part of Centro Panamericana (Pan-american Center). The communal bank is made up of six members and is run by a Board of Directors headed by Sra. Eva. The businesses run by the members of the communal bank are varied. Among them we have: llaucha (a Bolivian hotpocket) sales, cell phone sales, blanket plaiting, juice and soda sales and vegetable sales.

Sra. Eva notes that this is the first time the communal bank has joined with Pro Mujer and that they were invited to join by an advocate. Currently, Sra. Eva has a business selling "llauchas" (a Bolivian hot pocket), which she has been doing for the last eight years.

The loan that Sra. Eva is receiving is for the purchase of raw materials to make her llauchas (flour, lard etc.). She purchases these products wholesale in La Ceja. After making the llauchas, she distributes them as ordered. This form of work allows her to generate resources to support her family as much as possible, as she is single and has a son.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, Sra. Eva responds that she likes the savings and health plans.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
