“El Progreso del Vallecito“ is a new community bank that has seven members who are all enthusiastic about the 'Prosperidad' (Prosperity) program. Esther was elected president as her fellow bank members put their trust in her.

Esther is 35 years old, lives with her partner, and has two children who are dependent on her and her partner. She tells us that she sells food in a market in her community. She has been doing this for six months. She started her business with the idea of improving her income for the benefit of her family. Esther also has a small grocery store in her home. She is a hard-working woman who, thanks to her efforts, has been able to educate her two children and has managed to install her own electricity service in her home as her region doesn't have this service. Esther's wish is to build her home and have basic services such as water and sewerage. She is planning to use the loan that she has requested to stock her small grocery store with essential household products such as rice, sugar, milk, noodles etc. The members of the 'El Progreso del Vallecito' community bank are grateful for the trust that has been placed in them and in their businesses and they pledge to work well within the 'Prosperidad' program.

In the photo we can see the ladies on the day they received their loans, happy in their community and, accompanied by their children, enjoying a little get together.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
