Mujeres De Amistad Yepocapa Group's story
Gloria is forty-two years old, has been a widow for six years, and has three children (7 to 22 years old). Two of them are in first and seventh grade. Her oldest daughter is married and she is the grandmother of two.
Gloria opened her tortilla business three years ago and employs four women who support her in making the corn tortillas they sell at the three mealtimes (breakfast, lunch, dinner). Although Gloria only has four years of formal education, she is very business-savvy. She has carefully planned and is asking for a fourth Kiva loan to purchase corn, firewood, and gas in bulk. She has a goal of opening a new branch and being a source of employment for more women.
Gloria belongs to the Friendship Bridge communal bank Mujeres de Amistad Yepocapa, located in the department of Chimaltenango. The other six women in the group speak a little Kaqchikel and have businesses that sell corn tortillas, convenience stores, and variety sales. They meet monthly to make their loan payments and participate in the Microcrédito Plus program of microloans, educational training, and health services. Every two months, they have the opportunity to visit a nurse who offers them basic health services, such as women's health screenings, family planning consultation, and glucose and blood pressure monitoring.
