Orquidea Group's story

Although she only studied up to fifth grade, Rosa found an opportunity to get ahead in life by selling second-hand casual clothing. At fifty-eight years old, together with her husband who is a retired teacher, she has maintained this business for nine years, working from home and at a stall in the local market. Her dedication has enabled her to gain loyal customers and generate a stable income for her family.

Two years ago, Rosa decided to expand her business by offering document and photo printing, a job she does from home with the support of one of her daughters. She is applying for her eighth Kiva loan to buy casual clothing in bulk and continue to grow. Rosa dreams of attracting more customers and increasing her income, demonstrating that perseverance and hard work open up paths to a better future.

Rosa is part of The Friendship Bridge's "Orquideas" Communal Bank, made up of ten K'iche Mayan women who speak minimal Spanish. Because they have little or no formal education, they benefit from monthly trainings that are part of The Friendship Bridge's "Microcredit Plus" programme. They participate in training on preventive health, breast cancer and responsible money management. These trainings strengthen their lives and businesses. Twice a month, they access women's health services. Thank you!
