Girasoles De Ixchop Group's story
At 26 years old, Sara has converted her parents' artisan tradition into an opportunity to transform her future. From the state of Quiché and together with her spouse, she weaves traditions skirts calls "cortes" on standing looms, a business that she strengthened over four years. With effort she has managed to install four wooden looms and employ three women in her community. Each month they produce twelve made-to-order skirts, keeping alive a tradition that is distinctly Guatemalan.
Even though she only studied until sixth grade due to economic limitations, Sara never stopped dreaming. With her first Kiva loan that she is applying for, Sara hopes to buy two more looms as well as fabrics and threads in bulk to expand her production. Her goal is to strengthen her business and in the future starts a convenience store that will allow her to generate more income for her two children ages 6 and 3.
Sara is the secretary of the communal bank Girasoles de Ixchop with the Friendship Bridge. There are six other women in the group who speak the Mayan K'iche language and share a passion for crafts. They learn about business, saving, and good management which are essential for their businesses to proposer. This is a significant value for their lives. These themes are part of the Microcrédito Plus program which facilitates workshops on health, business, family via a loan officer who meets with the women every month. Thank you Kiva lenders for you interest in these women!
