Mujeres Unidas Group's story

40-year-old Silvia is an example of perseverance despite not having gone to school. She was widowed a few years ago, which left her in charge of four children who currently are between nine and twenty-four years old. Through a lot of hard work, Silvia has provided all of them with primary and secondary school education. She has been selling corn and chicken feed from her home for five years. With her first Kiva loan, Silvia wants to expand her business and buy more corn and chicken feed (concentrate) in bulk. She is hoping her business will become more and more profitable and provide her with financial security to get ahead with her children.

There are seven Mayan Mam women who live in the department (state) of Huehuetenango and they formed the Friendship Bridge communal bank Mujeres Unidas. The programme Microcrédito Plus allows women to participate in monthly training in business administration, health, family issues and women’s issues. Business management skills are essential to the success of their businesses – convenience stores, animal husbandry and the sale of bread, firewood, corn and animal feed. The women have the benefit of getting basic health services every two months.

Kiva lenders are a source of support for Silvia and the women of this communal bank. Thank you!
