The Beug Diam solidarity group was set up on 12th May 2010 and is made up of six women who live in the same compound.

Faty, who is responsible for the group, is married and mother to six children; she also has three grandchildren in her care. She is on the right of the photo and dressed in pink with a white shawl on her shoulders.

She has a farming activity during the rainy season and at the same time has been fattening both cattle and sheep for the past year. She has only a year's experience but has been successful.

She gets her supplies of sheep, goats and oxen at the village's weekly market and in surrounding villages. She resells them after three to six months of fattening.

With her loan she is planning to increase her livestock and buy a stock of food for them.

Faty helps her husband to cover the household's running costs for the children's food, clothes and health; she would like to boost her savings with the profits she makes.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
