The SATELITE community bank, associated with Centro Los Andes, is embarking on its first round of funding from Pro Mujer. The group's eight members are lead by a board headed by Sra. Esther. The members of the group operate a wide range of businesses: sales of party decorations; taxi services; sales of general merchandise; crafts sales; sales of baby clothes; curtain-making services; and cosmetics sales.

Sra. Esther says that she has worked with Pro Mujer for three years, but at another "centro focal". She joined the bank after being invited by friends. She has operated a business selling party decorations for seven years, a business that she learned from her mother.

She will use the loan to stock her business (with posters, colored paper, etc.). She plans to buy wholesale supplies of the products in La Paz and sell them later in the town of Victoria. The business provides her with a means to help her husband and their six children.

When we asked her what she likes about Pro Mujer, she answered that she likes everything about it.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
