Mrs. Kum is a 31-year-old married woman and the mother of two school-aged children who have been living in the province of Kompong Cham. She and her husband are local farmers who have been planting a variety of crops for years. They normally work together in the fields growing rice, and they often succeed with good crops. Now Mrs. Kum needs money to buy a plot of fertile land to expand her farm, and has requested a loan of $700.
Hattha Kaksekar Limited is one of the largest and most successful microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cambodia. The organization provides microfinance services to the poor, particularly women, in urban and rural areas. Kiva lenders’ funds will be used to expand the outreach of HKL’s financial services to a greater number of clients in rural areas of Cambodia.
