Joyce, age 38, is a farmer from the town of Kitale in western Kenya, where she has been farming for 15 years. Her main products are milk, maize, beans, vegetables, and tomatoes, which are all sold locally. She is also a fish vendor. She and her husband have six children between the ages of 6 and 22, four of whom are currently attending school.
Joyce has applied for this loan of 31,200 Kes through Juhudi Kilimo in order to purchase and insure a dairy cow. The extra income from this loan will help improve her family's standard of living. She faces the challenge of animal diseases and the high cost of animal feed. In the next five years, she hopes to have increased her milk productivity to at least 50 litres daily. She also hopes to continue to have access to loans through Juhudi Kilimo.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
