Simon K. is forty-seven years old, married, and they have three children between fourteen years old and three years old. His business is located at Eregi in Kakamega. Kakamega is a rich agricultural area found in the western region of Kenya. The area is known for large-scale production of sugarcane and thus commonly referred to as the sugarbelt region.
Simon cuts and sells timber to other timber sellers and carpenters in the area. He says that this business is profitable and the major challenge he has is getting a permit for cutting down trees. However, he works very hard and engages in planting trees to keep his business doing well and to ensure that his business is not detrimental to the environment.
He is using his loan of 40,000 KES to buy a power saw to grow his business. His dream is to better his business and provide a good education to his children. He describes himself as focussed and persistent.
