Linet is 44 years old and has been in active farming for the last 20 years in her home area of Kitale in Western Kenya. She is married with four children, two adults and the others of school age. Her farm produces maize, beans and tomatoes with the help of two farmhands.
Linet has made a request for a loan from Juhudi KIilimo amounting to 70,000 KES to expand her poultry project by buying more birds and constructing a poultry unit for the birds. She hopes the loan will improve her income and support the family in terms of food provision. Linet points out that poultry feed has become expensive and animal diseases are also common.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
