Sofia is a single mother with 4 children in her charge, one of whom now lives with his wife and the other three still depend on her. Sofia is a happy woman and also a responsible one, for which reason the village bank "Las Emprendedoras D. la Q" elected her as president. They chose the name "Emprendedoras" [Entrepreneurs] because they all identify as people that push development in their zone with their hard work and efforts; and "D. la Q" [of the Q] because they are all neighbors on the Q block.

Sofia sells sweets and sodas; sometimes she sells them in front of her house, other times she goes to the soccer fields to offer sodas to the seated players. When she is able, she takes advantage of other changes to make money, like participating in activities driven by the government that give her some extra income.

Sofia's dream is to see her children achieve college educations and be able to sustain their costs and those of their future families.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
