Chebet is a farmer in the Kitale area in Western Kenya and has been in the farming business for three years. She engages the services of two farmhands and sells her eggs to the local market. She is married with two children aged 8 and 3. Both are schooling.
Chebet has made a request for a loan amounting to 41,600 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase and insure a dairy cow. She says she wants to venture into dairy farming to diversify her interests so she'll have some security from the outbreaks of poultry diseases. She says her focus is to own better breeds of dairy cows once the business is up and running.
Chebet concurs with other farmers that animal diseases are their main undoing in business. She appreciates Juhudi Kilimo's empowering mechanism.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
