Mary is a 55 year old mother 5 children, all adults. She is a resident and a farmer in Kitale Town Western Kenya where she has been doing mixed farming for over 20 years and producing maize, beans, and vegetables, which all go to the local market.
Mary has requested for a loan of 52,000 KES from Kiva Partner Juhudi Kilimo to purchase and insure a dairy cow. She says the proceeds from the dairy will help her educate three of her children who are undertaking their post secondary education. She adds the income will also help in improving the family living standards.
Mary notes that their challenge in farming business is the poor market prices for the produce. She is however greatful to Juhudi for the services and remains optimistic about the business.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
