This village bank loan consists of ten members who will each use their portion of the loan for different purposes to improve their family’s standard of living. Mrs. Nhan is the village bank president who has been selected by the members. She was born in 1972. She is a farmer who owns a 1.5-hectare plot of land where she grows rice to support her own family and to sell. She also breeds chickens.

It is time to farm the rice field and she needs some money to support this activity. To improve her rice production, Mrs. Nhan is applying for a loan to buy rice seed, fertilizer and pesticide. With the rest of the loan she is going to plow her own field. Her husband is a construction worker. Through these activities, they support three children who are studying at the local public school.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
