Elmer sells tubers and has a stall in his city market; he has had his business for about 6 years. Previously, Elmer worked helping his father framing metals but due to the little work he decided to leave the business and help his mother who sells vegetables. Little by little he learned about the business and with his brother they decided to open their own stalls to sell vegetables and tubers. They tried out the business for 15 days and sadly his brother got discouraged and left. Elmer started out with very little capital but at this time he has gotten ahead and at present has 2 trucks that he uses to give transportation to his colleagues who bring their products from the wholesaler market. This has encouraged him devote himself to this work and wants to buy another truck and hopes to buy his own plot of land in the future. The loan will help him to keep buying his products that he sells for example: potatoes, onions, tomatoes, etc. At present he is the president of the group “Faith and Happiness.”

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
