This committee is named “Mujeres al Poder” (Women of Power), which is starting its fourth loan cycle with 17 members. All of these women are responsible and hardworking. The members are humble, but have made sacrifices. They do not take into account the difficulties presented before them each day because they seek to excel in their work for themselves and their families. For them, family is everything so they seek to move forward with pride and honesty.

Sra. Graciela is the committee president. She sells food from a stand that she owns. There she tries to provide the best food products to the various people who come to her business. Graciela is very helpful and concerned about the quality of products that she offers. In addition, she tries to be a friend to her customers, not just a merchant. She says that everyone can become friends instead of buying and selling as strangers.

Hoping to receive assistance from Kiva, the members are requesting a loan to buy all of the supplies needed to expand their small businesses. Sra. Graciela will use the loan she requested to buy baked goods, meats, legumes, beverages, and other food products needed for preparing dishes to sell later.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
