Rose is a farmer in Muranga Town in Central Kenya. She has had a mixed farm for the last 20 years. She is married with two children; one child is still at school. Her farm produces milk, bananas and coffee, which she sells to the local market. She is helped by two farmhands.
Rose has requested a loan of 80,000 Kenyan Shillings (KES) from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase and insure a dairy cow and a water pump. She says this loan will help improve her income and her family's living standards and make the water supply for the farm more secure. She adds that the future is looking good with the availability of agricultural loans.
Rose, however, observes that animal feed costs are still a challenge.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
