Susan is a farmer in her hometown of Nkubu in Central Kenya. She is married with four children aged between 3 to 10 years with the first two already attending school. She has been in the mixed farming business for 15 years producing maize, beans, eggs, milk and tea, which are all sold locally.
Susan has made a request for a loan amounting to 60,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to enable her expand her poultry business though the purchase of more birds. She says the expansion of the poultry business will make her realize more income and adequately provide for her young family. She aspires to grow her farm in future though purchase of additional land.
Susan laments that disease outbreaks and low market prices are the main challenges to farming businesses in the area. She adds that Juhudi Kilimo loans have really helped needy families.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
