Carmen came to Grameen America several years ago with the dream of starting her own business selling jewelry and other beauty supplies. Born and raised in Ecuador, she had no prior experience running a business in the United States and, before joining our program, she could not find access to the start-up capital needed to make her dreams a reality. Carmen is now on her fourth Grameen America loan, having used her first three to purchase beauty products that she sold to a growing list of customers out of her home. With this latest loan, Carmen is ready to take a major professional step by moving her business to the local flea market. She will use the proceeds from her Grameen America loan to stock up on inventory (jewelry and beauty products) and to pay the fees associated with operating a table at the market. Carmen believes that selling her merchandise at the flea market will increase her profits dramatically and introduce her to many new customers, which in turn will bring her even closer to her ultimate goal of opening a storefront. Carmen is dedicated to achieving her goal and creating a more comfortable life for her three children.
