María Elizabeth
The Banco Comunal Los Tres Ángeles (The Three Agels Communal Bank) meets every fortnight in the Montecristi Canton, a place renowned for its rich pre-colonial culture and for its arts and crafts, celebrated both at national and international level. It is also the homeland of the famous Toquilla straw hats.

This place is where we meet Maria, aged 21, who is married and has a 10-months-old child. Her husband is a craftsman working with aluminum and glass. Later this year, she will start attending classes in an institute to get a diploma in education.

She has set a general store in her house where she sells every kind of product such as rice, sugar, oils, detergents and so on. She works there every day form 6 am to 8 pm, even until later sometimes. On top of the aforementioned products she also ells Avon products (beauty items, cosmetics, perfumes and accessories for women): she sells them in her shop and sometimes she also sells them door to door. She told us she has been running her shop for three years and that she started thanks to the first loan she received from the institution.

She will use the amount of this loan to supply her shop by buying rice, sugar, oil, detergents, sausages and other basic necessities. She has been a member of the Communal Bank since the beginning, and she likes it because thanks to the first loan she was able to open her shop.

She wishes to have a house of her own someday.
