The “ROSAS D. ALTO LIMA” community bank is about to start its 26th loan cycle with Pro Mujer, as part of the Alto Lima regional office. This group has eight members and its president is Elena. The businesses that the members carry out are varied and incluD.: selling baby clothes, sewing jackets, selling hairdressing products, selling meals, selling backpacks and selling footwear.

Elena, the bank's president, tells us that this is her fourth loan cycle with Pro Mujer and she joined because some friends brought her along.

Elena has a business selling footwear which she has owned for 23 years. She tells us that she learned the business from her husband because he makes shoes for 'cholitas' (ladies who dress in traditional clothing). Elena will use this loan to increase her capital (buying more shoes). She actually buys her merchandise from her sales location because many people come to sell their products to her. Sometimes she also buys her products in Huyustus Street (a commercial area of L. Paz). She then sells them in Panorámica Avenue, from her fixed sales location. She makes her sales every day. This work allows her to make money to support her family. She lives with her partner and has six children.

When we asked her what she likes about Pro Mujer, she replied that she likes the mandatory savings.

In the photo you can only make out the profile of Frecia and Gladys since they were on the edge of the picture.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
