Philip has been practicing mixed farming for the last fifteen years in Litein town in Rift Valley Kenya. He sells his products of maize, beans and milk to the local market.
Philip is 35 and married with five children aged between two and 10 years. All the children attend school except the youngest.
He has requested a loan of 50,000 Kes through Kiva Partner, Juhudi Kilimo, to purchase and insure a dairy cow. The extra income from the sale of milk will enable him to pay school fees for his children and improve his family's livelihood. He faces the challenge of unpredictable weather conditions and lack of a stable market for his products.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
About Juhudi Kilimo:
Juhudi Kilimo is a for-profit social enterprise working with small-holder farmers in Kenya to finance purchases of dairy cows, chickens, agricultural equipment, and other assets that create immediate cash flow. Many of the assets are insured to prevent devastating business losses, and targeted technical assistance is provided to farmers, from agricultural training to basic book keeping and local market research.
