Teresita is a member of the “Colibrí” group and she lives in a place called Tierra Blanca, which is best known as the “Beloved of the Sun” because, in addition to being a cattle region, it is one of the hottest places in VeraC.. Teresita is 45 years old. She studied to be a secretary, which was her career until her children were born.

She tells us that a little more than 23 years ago, with the support of her husband, she decided to start her own business. She opened a small stationary store, which she called Papelería Junior. She says “Like I told my husband, as long as there are schools, we will always be able to sell. That’s why I always like to have a good amount of stock even if it’s only a little bit of each thing, so that students and children will always find what they are looking for.”

Teresita needs this loan to buy pencils, pencil cases, paper in white and other colors, glue, scissors, paper board, bond paper, modeling clay, polystyrene, foam, notebooks, spiral notebooks, laminates, and biographies, to re-stock her store.

Vianey is another member of the “Colibrí” group. She is 40 years old. She only attended junior high, and she is married. She has two daughters, both of whom practice dance and volley ball.

She tells us that more than ten years ago, she decided to start her own business selling cakes, bread, and flan. She sometimes sells by previous order, and sometimes she sells door to door. She explains that what helps her have good sales is having many friends.

She needs this loan to buy eggs, butter, milk, baking tins, cooking gas, flour, whipped cream, fruits, and food colorings for the preparation of her cakes. She is very happy with this loan because it will help her business to prosper.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
