In the Rocafuerte canton, 12 members of the Mujeres De Exito (Women of Success) Microfinance Institute get together every fifteen days. This place is well-known for the delicious candy that the locals make and is famous throughout the country. Fifteen loan cycles ago, a group of people came together in order to obtain the loans that this institute offers. These group members sell anything from general merchandise to food, or they provide telephone or beauty services, among other things.

Here is where we met Luisa Maria Z., a 21-year-old single woman who lives in her parents' home with her two younger siblings. She is currently in her fourth semester of premed at the university. This is her first loan cycle with the institute, and she likes it because her fellow group members have received her well.

She sells Avon and Yanbal products (beauty products, cosmetics, fragrances, and women's accessories). She works every day, selling products to her classmates at the university. She sells door-to-door and by order, accepting credit from her customers and billing them weekly. She states that she has been in business for four months after a friend motivated her to enter the world of sales. Business is going well, and she has been able to pay for part of her studies with her earnings.

She will invest this loan in purchasing fragrances, fashion jewelry, cosmetics, lotions, and other products.

Her wish is to become a great doctor.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
