The businesses that the members of the bank are engaged in are varied and include: macramé-ing blankets, weaving 'enaguas' (traditional underskirts) by machine, macramé and spinning yarn, knitting sweaters, buying and selling livestock, selling vegetables and selling fruit.

Juana, the bank's president, says that she has been working with Pro Mujer for 10 years and became a member of the institution when they were doing some promotional activities in her area.

Juana has a business selling vegetables which she has owned for 17 years. She tells us that she learned the business from her older sister. Juana will use the loan that she is currently requesting to increase her merchandise (buying vegetables). She buys her merchandise in La Ceja, in the city of El Alto and sells it in street markets from Monday to Sunday, from 7.00am to 8.00pm. This work allows her to make the money she needs to support her family. Juana lives with her partner and has three children.

When we asked her what she likes about Pro Mujer, she replied that she likes the comprehensive services they offer, the health services and the loans.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
