William L., 44, is a married father of eight children whose ages range between 1 and 18 years. Six of the children are currently attending school.
He is a farmer from the town of Litein in the Rift Valley of Kenya, where he has been practicing mixed farming for ten years. He employs one farmhand and sells his milk to the local market. He also operates a retail shop in the same town.
He has requested a loan of 60,000 KES through Kiva partner Juhudi Kilimo to purchase and insure a dairy cow. The extra income from this loan will be invested towards the education of his children.
He would like to have at least four pure breed dairy cows and a water pump in the future. His major challenges have been diseases and lack of enough animal feed and water.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
About Juhudi Kilimo:
Juhudi Kilimo is a for-profit social enterprise working with small-holder farmers in Kenya to finance purchases of dairy cows, chickens, agricultural equipment, and other assets that create immediate cash flow. Many of the assets are insured to prevent devastating business losses, and targeted technical assistance is provided to farmers, from agricultural training to basic book keeping and local market research.
