Silas is a farmer in Kitale Town in Western Kenya practicing mixed farming and producing maize, milk and beans. He has been in farming for five years and has engaged two farmhands in the farm. He earns additional income from his retail shop business in the local market. He is aged 20.
Silas has requested a loan of 36,400 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase and insure a dairy cow. He plans to use the increased proceeds from the loan to purchase three more dairy cows before boosting his retail business. He is more optimistic with dairy farming owing to better prices prevailing currently.
Silas however observes that fluctuating weather conditions make animal feed expensive. Animal diseases adds to the challenge.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
