The Communal Association “Nueva Asunción” is starting its first loan cycle with Pro Mujer as part of the Los Andes Community Center. This group consists of eight members and is led by a Board of Directors. Sra. Palmeira serves as its president.

Sra. Palmeira worked with Pro Mujer for twelve loan cycles prior to assuming her responsibilities as president of the “Nueva Asunción” Communal Association. She says that she started her business fifteen years ago. Palmeira buys and sells used furniture and is also a wholesale vendor of movies.

With this loan, she plans to expand her inventory of movies. She buys these products in Desaguadero (a region located on the border between Bolivia and Peru) and then sells them at the July 16th Fair on Thursdays and Sundays all day. This business enables her to support her family. Palmeira is married and has nine children, two of whom are married while the other seven live with her.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, Palmeira said she enjoys learning how to manage her money, limit her spending, and increase her capital. She also believes that the care provided at the health clinic is good.

The members of the Communal Association engage in various businesses. These include selling fruit, braiding rugs, selling movies, starting a food business, buying faucets from Oruro, and selling stuffed snacks.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
