Elibit is 50 years old and has been practising mixed farming for 30 years producing and selling milk, maize and beans in her local market of Litein in South Rift, Kenya. She is married with seven children, four of whom are still in school.
Elibit has requested a loan of 60,000 KES from Kiva partner, Juhudi Kilimo, to purchase a motorcycle. She believes the purchase of a motorcycle will ensure prompt delivery of her produce, especially milk, and will enable her to make more income and expand her dairy farming. She says the additional income will also help her meet her family's needs. Her business challenges are animal diseases and dry spells, which result in animal feed shortages.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
