Cyrus is a farmer from the town of Murang'a in central Kenya, where he has been farming for twenty years. Cyrus is 55 years old and married with three children between the ages of 12 and 27. Two of his children are currently attending school. Cyrus employs two farmhands and sells his coffee and bananas to the local market. He solely depends on the income from his farm to cater for the needs of his family. He has requested a loan of 40,000 Kes through Juhudi Kilimo to purchase a water tank. He says that this water tank will help him save enough water for farming, especially during the dry seasons, and this will improve his production. He would like to irrigate his farm in future and also increase his production of bananas and french beans. Drought has been his biggest challenge in farming.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
