Soem R., age 41, lives in the province of Kompong Tom, which is the best area for farming. Soem R. is a married woman who is devoted to her three children, one of whom is a student. The other two are sewing workers in a factory. Soem R. and her husband work together in the same business, as salt and potato traders in a mobile unit. The family typically generates revenue of US$8 each day, which helps them live a comfortable life. Soem R. would like a loan in order to purchase a piece of land in good condition for a farming. She will rent out this land to farmers for a fee.
Hattha Kaksekar Limited is one of the largest and most successful microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cambodia. The organization provides microfinance services to the poor, particularly women, in urban and rural areas. Kiva lenders’ funds will be used to expand the outreach of HKL’s financial services to a greater number of clients in rural areas of Cambodia.
