Lupe, 50, is a member of the Las Gardenias community bank. She has 4 children, one of whom is still in school. She is separated from her partner, but she can count on support from her older children. Lupe operates a corner store in her house. She also sells beauty products from well-known companies. She is happy with the business because sales are good. Past loans have helped her establish the grocery business and she will use this loan to buy wholesale supplies of rice, sugar and soft drinks that she will then resell. Lupe is an enterprising woman who has had to pick up responsibility for her family's expenses for the good of herself and the family. Lupe is wearing a white blouse in the photograph. The young girl is with her mother, another member of the group, and Sr. C. J. Cristian Jackson wasn't able to attend on the day the loan was distributed because he had to work.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
