Margaret is a farmer from Kitale town in western Kenya. She has been in the farming business for 6 years and employs two farmhands. Her farm is currently producing eggs and milk, which she sells to the local market.
She has requested for a loan of KES 35,000, through Juhudi Kilimo, to expand her poultry project. The proceeds from this project will assist her in paying school fees for her children. She says that her primary challenges have been marketing of her farm products and access to the market due to poor road network in the area. She however intends to venture into a more sustainable dairy farming which can help improve her livelihood.
Margaret is 35 years old and married with 4 children who are between the ages of 3 and 9. Two of the children are currently attending school.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
