María Carmen's story

María D. is a member of the Corazones de Turi ("Turi Hearts") community bank. She lives in the Corazón de Jesús community in the parish of Turi. The place is admired for being the viewpoint of the city, and its people work in trade, animal husbandry and agriculture.

María is 47 years old and married with four children, aged 26, 23, 13 and 12 years old. Her two eldest children are married and live independently. Her 13 year old daughter helps at home and is distance learning. Her 12 year old son could not start secondary school due to their lack of funds. Her husband works as a builder and with both their effort they have managed to build their own home.

María takes care of the household chores and works in agriculture. She grows vegetables and raises animals such as guinea pigs and chickens, which she sells in the city of Cuenca or in her community.

This is her third loan cycle with the communal bank, and she plans to invest it in the purchase of more chickens to continue her business. Her goal is to have a bigger chicken farm.
