It is one of the most populated and rural areas of the Domincan Republic's capital city. The women mainly sell clothes, shoes, accessories, cosmetics, food and other miscellaneous products.

Bertha's family consists of herself, her husband and her 3 children. They all live under the same roof, in a humble house, in an area which is poor both in financial terms and in terms of services. Bertha's plans are to own a good upholstery business with many customers, making and selling all kinds of furniture. Her challenges are to educate her children and to provide them with what they need to get ahead in life.

Bertha works as an upholsterer and also repairs furniture. Thanks to her knowledge, she has been able to create this business which is quite scarce in the area in which she lives. She would like to expand her services and make good-quality furniture to sell at a good price. She is very excited to be receiving her second loan from Esperanza and will invest the money in buying fabric, accessories, wood and some tools that she needs for her business. She is a very hard-working woman and is an example for her family and the other women in her group.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
